DAY JOB: Flame Artist | CG Compositor
PASSION PROJECT: Encaustic | Beeswax | Cardboard
Joanne Ungar works with molten wax and discarded packaging, exploring the tension between control and unpredictability. Each piece incorporates used cardboard—boxes or other packaging—painted and embedded within layers of pigmented wax on wood panels. She views this process as a form of collage, unifying disparate materials through encaustic, refined beeswax, and cardboard. Her practice is experimental, intuitive, and rooted in sustainability, with each piece individually poured and cast, making it unique and unrepeatable.
By focusing on the structure and form of packaging, Unngar reflects on consumer culture and the disposability of modern technology. Re-presenting these scraps allows her to create time-capsule-like objects—mementos that both preserve and critique our casual carelessness toward the planet. In this way, her work functions as both material exploration and cultural commentary.
